Panel 1: Inflation, Financial Stability and Employment
The global economy is grappling with multiple challenges of inflation, financial stability, and growth not seen in decades. Inflationary pressure has proven more persistent than expected on the back of resilient labour markets in an increasingly fragmented global economy. The “high-for-longer” interest rate environment needed to combat inflation exposes financial vulnerabilities built up over the past decade, posing risks to the growth outlook and financial stability.
What are the policy tradeoffs for central banks and how best to calibrate their policy tools in the period ahead to meet the global challenges?

Panel 2: The Future of Monetary System
Financial innovation in the past decade has dramatically reshaped monetary systems across the globe, but also brought challenges to policymakers. In this rapidly changing landscape, central banks play a critical role in promoting innovation while safeguarding financial stability.
In this light, more concerted efforts to bring about a more resilient monetary system will be imperative. What are central bank governors’ insights on the merits and downsides of these technological advancements, the challenges involved in their development, associated risks and central banks’ role in managing them, as well as key considerations involved for crafting an appropriate regulatory framework?

Panel 3: Thirty Years of Central Banking
Over the past thirty years, the world economy has weathered through several challenging periods, including the Asian Financial Crisis of 1997-98, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008-09 and the global pandemic that began in 2020 and its aftermath. Central banks, alongside other authorities, have adapted and adjusted their policy tools to cope with these challenges, including reviewing and updating their mandates. In an increasingly uncertain world where inflation is likely to stay higher for longer, technologies are shaping the financial and economic landscape in fundamental ways, and international cooperation is increasingly challenged across many spheres. How could we draw wisdom from the past to prepare better for the future?

Over the past quarter century since the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997, Asian economies have grown substantially and become a major driver of global growth. The region’s financial landscape has also been transformed dramatically, in part by the advent of the digital era. Looking ahead, what are the key challenges and opportunities for Asia’s economic growth?
