Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Tuesday) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$3,303.3 billion as at 31 May 2015, HK$35.9 billion lower than that at the end of April 2015.  Foreign currency assets decreased by HK$14.7 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets decreased by HK$21.2 billion.

The decline in foreign currency assets was mainly due to a decrease in unsettled purchases of securities and mark-to-market losses on foreign currency portfolios.  The decline in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to the withdrawals of placements by Fiscal Reserves as well as HKSAR government funds and statutory bodies, and mark-to-market losses on Hong Kong equities.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of May 2015 was HK$1,424.8 billion, decreased by HK$1.1 billion, or 0.1%, from the end of April 2015.  The decline was mainly due to a decrease in the outstanding amount of Certificates of Indebtedness.

The amount of Backing Assets decreased by HK$0.6 billion, or 0.04%, to HK$1,525.1 billion.  The decrease was mainly attributable to a reduction in assets connected with the redemption of Certificates of Indebtedness, which was partly offset by interest from investments.  The backing ratio increased from 107.00% at the end of April 2015 to 107.04% at the end of May 2015.
