Issue of the Commemorative Silver Coin Set

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Friday) its plans to launch in 2002 the Five Blessings Commemorative Coin Set on behalf of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The set comprises five silver coins together with a gold medallion.

These will be the first silver coins issued in Hong Kong for many years. The last silver coin was issued in 1933.

Each of the five coins will have a silver core plated with 24-carat gold on both sides. The coins will bear the standard Bauhinia design on the obverse side. On the reverse side, there will be special commemorative designs, each depicting one of five traditional blessings or felicitations in Chinese: "萬事如意" (May your wishes come true), "年年有餘" (May every year bring a surplus), "馬到功成" (Speedy success), "花開富貴" (Flowers bloom for prosperity), and "貨如輪轉" (May your stock turn over like a spinning wheel).

The gold medallion carries on the reverse side a symbol depicting "五福臨門" (Five blessings coming to one's door). On its obverse side, the centre of the medallion will have an inner ring design of the Hong Kong Region Emblem, the Bauhinia.

This coin set will be minted by the Royal Canadian Mint of Canada. Each set will be issued with an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity.

Proceeds from the sale of the silver coin sets will be used to fund selected charities and community projects for the benefit of the community.

Application details will be announced in December.
