The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Thursday) the appointment of Mr Stefan Gerlach as Executive Director in charge of research matters with effect from 7 May 2001. He will also become the Director of the Hong Kong Institute for Monetary Research.
Mr Gerlach has extensive experience in the research and policy field. He has worked in the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) since 1992, where he is currently the Head of Monetary Policy and Exchange Rates, Research and Policy Analysis Group of the Monetary and Economic Department. He has also been serving part-time as Adjunct Professor of Economics at the University of Basel, and is a Research Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London. Prior to joining the BIS, Mr Gerlach was Associate Professor of Economics at Brandeis University in Massachusetts, USA.
"The experience and expertise that Mr Gerlach brings to us will further improve the breadth, depth and quality of our research work to support policy formulation in the monetary and financial spheres," said Mr Joseph Yam, Chief Executive of the HKMA.
The Executive Director (Research) post has been vacant since 16 December 2000, following Mr Guy Meredith's return to the International Monetary Fund upon completing a two-year contract with the HKMA.
