HKMA Alerts Public About Commemorative $1 Million Note

A spokesman for the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today issued an alert to the public about possible confusion between commemorative $1 million notes and legal tender note issues.

"These commemorative notes (so called banknotes) are not issued by note-issuing banks or any bank, nor by the Hong Kong Government. They incorporate features which give them an appearance similar to banknotes, and are described on their face as "commemorative banknotes". We are concerned that they may be mistaken as legal tender by the unwary," said the HKMA spokesman.

The HKMA is considering whether any further action is required in relation to this matter.
