Issuance of the 1997 Commemorative Proof Coin Set

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announces today (11 May) the launch of the 1997 Commemorative Proof Coin Set which is issued by the HKMA on behalf of the Government to mark the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997.

The public is invited to apply from tomorrow (Monday, 12 May) until Thursday, 15 May 1997 for the purchase of the Proof set using application forms which appear in advertisements in major newspapers starting tomorrow.

The set of seven coins are in the same denominations as the seven currently circulating coins. Each coin bears the standard Bauhinia design on the obverse side and its own special commemorative design and the denomination on the reverse side. The Commemorative Coins are minted by the UK Royal Mint and are available in proof quality. The Proof coins are meticulously produced and are sealed in a presentation case to avoid any fingerprints or marks that will impair their delicate finish.

"The Proof set will be of great commemorative value. Only 73,000 sets will be available in Hong Kong and the worldwide issue limit is 97,000 sets," said an HKMA spokesman.

The Proof set will be sold in Hong Kong for HK$398 each via public application. Each Hong Kong Identity Card holder can apply for one set only and the deadline for application is Thursday, 15 May 1997. Completed application forms should be dropped into collection boxes located at Bank of China, Hong Kong Branch (located at Garden Road) or designated sub-branches (in Central; City Garden in North Point; Nathan Road in Yaumatei; Kowloon Plaza in Lai Chi Kok; Lucky Plaza in Shatin and Tuen Mun Plaza II in Tuen Mun).

In the event of over-subscription, a ballot will be held. Successful applicants will be notified by mail and they can purchase the Proof sets at designated collection outlets starting from 23 June 1997.

Proceeds from the sale of the Proof sets after deducting the cost of issue will be used to fund selected projects for the benefit of the community.
