Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (29 July) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$4,210.5 billion as at 30 June 2022, HK$227.1 billion lower than that at the end of May 2022. Foreign currency assets decreased by HK$122.7 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets decreased by HK$104.4 billion.

The decline in foreign currency assets was mainly due to the sale of US dollars under the Currency Board arrangements and the mark-to-market revaluation on investments. The decline in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to the reduction in the month-end balances of Exchange Fund Bills and Notes issued but not yet settled, and the withdrawals of Fiscal Reserves placements.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of June 2022 was HK$2,048.2 billion, decreased by HK$79.9 billion, or 3.8%, from the end of May 2022. The decline was mainly due to the purchase of HK dollars under the Currency Board arrangements, which was partly offset by an increase in the outstanding amount of Certificates of Indebtedness.

The amount of Backing Assets decreased by HK$82.0 billion, or 3.5%, to HK$2,255.5 billion. The decrease was mainly attributable to the sale of US dollars under the Currency Board arrangements, which was partly offset by the issuance of Certificates of Indebtedness. The backing ratio increased from 109.84% at the end of May 2022 to 110.12% at the end of June 2022.
