The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) wishes to alert members
of the public to recent fraud cases where victims were informed by
fraudsters, who claimed to be an HKMA staff, by phone (sometimes
with caller display showing the numbers "085228788196"), that they
have won a lottery and would be paid a large sum of money. They
were told to deposit an advance fee into a designated bank account
before the lottery money would be remitted from the HKMA.
The HKMA wishes to inform the public that the HKMA has no
connection with the fraudulent phone calls. The HKMA has already
reported the cases to the Hong Kong Police Force for
investigation.
Anyone who receives fraudulent phone calls of this kind is
advised to contact the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong
Police Force (telephone number: 2860 5012).
