In response to enquiries, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) has confirmed that, in the early stages of the programme for designing and producing a new generation of Hong Kong banknotes, the note-issuing banks were consulted on whether they had any interest in issuing banknotes of denominations other than the current $20 - $1000 denominations. The note-issuing banks indicated that they had no interest. Prior to the initiation of the present project, the HKMA further approached the note-issuing banks on this subject and discussed with them the Government's proposal to issue a $10 currency note. The note-issuing banks expressed their support for the proposal.
