The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) this summer will present an exhibition entitled "Money in Hong Kong". This will be the main public education initiative by the HKMA for this year.

The Exhibition will be held at three different locations, running from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily during the following periods:

  • Discovery Park, Tsuen Wan

  • Festival Walk, Kowloon Tong

    4-7 August (Friday to Monday)

  • Pacific Place, Admiralty

    11-14 August (Friday to Monday)

"The aim of our Money in Hong Kong Exhibition is to explain the work of the HKMA to the general public in a lively and interesting way and to place current HKMA policies in their historical perspective," said Mr Joseph Yam, Chief Executive of the HKMA.

The Exhibition will feature:

  • Money Past and Present: Perspectives on money and banking in Hong Kong, past and present, banknote design and security features, historical exhibits of Hong Kong coins and banknotes.
  • Money Future: e-money and e-banking
  • Monetary Stability: the linked exchange rate and currency board system, set in historical and economic context.
  • Money Saved: investment objectives and strategy of the Exchange Fund
  • Money in Motion: how Hong Kong's interbank payment system works, and how the proposed US dollar clearing system will work

The exhibition will be accompanied by informal talks on identifying counterfeit banknotes and the story behind Hong Kong's notes and coins, a radio quiz (Roland's choice, RTHK 2, 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, 24 July to 14 August) and the launch of an improved and redesigned HKMA website.
