Issuance of the 1997 Commemorative Gold Coin

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announces today the launch of the 1997 Commemorative Gold Coin which is issued by the HKMA on behalf of the Government to mark the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region on 1 July 1997.

The Gold Coin bears the standard Bauhinia design on the obverse side, with a special commemorative design of the Hong Kong skyline on the reverse side. The Gold Coin is legal tender with HK$1,000 face value. It is produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 22 carat gold. Each coin is individually numbered with a Certificate of Authenticity.

"The Gold Coin will be of great commemorative value. Only 69,000 pieces will be available in Hong Kong and the worldwide issue limit is 97,000," said an HKMA spokesman.

The Gold Coin will be sold in Hong Kong for HK$3,988 each via public application through HongkongBank. Each Hong Kong Identity Card holder can apply for one Gold Coin only and the deadline for application is Saturday, 24 May 1997. In the event of over-subscription, a ballot will be held. Successful applicants will be able to collect their Gold Coins starting from 8 July 1997.

Application forms will be available from tomorrow (Thursday, 8 May 1997) until 24 May 1997 at 10 branches of HongkongBank (China Building, Des Voeux Road West, Hong Kong Main Office, Kwun Tong, Mongkok, North Point, Paterson Street, Tsuen Wan, Wayfoong House and Yuen Long).

Proceeds from the sale of the Gold Coins after deducting the cost of issue will be used to fund selected projects for the benefit of the community.
