Monetary Statistics for September 2015

According to statistics published today (Friday) by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, total deposits with authorized institutions were virtually unchanged in September 2015. As the decrease in time deposits exceeded the increase in demand and savings deposits, Hong Kong-dollar deposits edged down by 0.2%. Overall foreign-currency deposits increased by 0.2%. Renminbi deposits in Hong Kong declined by 8.5% to RMB895.4 billion at the end of September. The total remittance of renminbi for cross-border trade settlement amounted to RMB738.6 billion in September, compared with RMB727.9 billion in August.

Total loans and advances decreased by 0.5% in September. Among the total, loans for use in Hong Kong (including trade finance) declined by 0.7% from a month ago, while loans for use outside Hong Kong were virtually unchanged. As Hong Kong-dollar loans declined at a faster pace than Hong Kong-dollar deposits, the Hong Kong-dollar loan-to-deposit ratio edged down to 78.4% at the end of September from 78.5% at the end of August.

In the third quarter of 2015, loans for use in Hong Kong (including trade finance) decreased by 1.3% after declining by 0.5% in the earlier quarter. Analysed by economic use, the quarterly decline was led mainly by trade finance, loans to stockbrokers, and loans to the wholesale and retail trade sector.

Seasonally adjusted Hong Kong-dollar M1 declined by 0.6% in September and grew by 15.1% year on year. Seasonally unadjusted Hong Kong-dollar M3 decreased by 0.3% during the month but expanded by 10.1% from a year earlier.
