Senior Staff Appointments

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) today (Thursday) announced that the Financial Secretary, following the advice of the Governance Sub-Committee of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, has approved the appointment of Mr Nelson Man as Executive Director (Banking Supervision) with effect from 26 July 2008. The current Executive Director (Banking Supervision), Mr Arthur Yuen, will take up the post of Executive Director (External) on the same day, replacing Ms Julia Leung, who will be leaving the HKMA to assume the position of Under Secretary in the Financial Services and Treasury Bureau.

Mr Man is currently a Division Head in the Banking Supervision Department. He has extensive supervisory experience, having worked in both the Banking Development and Banking Supervision departments. He joined the HKMA in 1994 as a Senior Manager and was promoted to the position of Division Head in 2000. Before joining the HKMA Mr Man worked for four years with the Securities and Futures Commission.

Mr Yuen has been Executive Director (Banking Supervision) since 2005, having previously served as Executive Director (Banking Development). His wide experience in the HKMA includes four years as Division Head in the External Department and former Market Development Division, with responsibility for research and liaison in relation to the Mainland's economic and market development.

Ms Leung will remain in her current post as Executive Director (External) until her last working day with the HKMA on 25 July. Commenting on Ms Leung's departure, the Chief Executive of the HKMA, Mr Joseph Yam, commended Ms Leung for her outstanding work during her 14 years with the HKMA. "Julia has made important contributions to the maintenance of Hong Kong as an international financial centre, particularly in promoting initiatives for developing the relationship between the financial systems of the Mainland and Hong Kong. She has been an excellent colleague, and we shall miss her very much. We are however pleased that she will continue to serve Hong Kong in a new public position, and we look forward to working closely with her in this capacity. We wish her every success," Mr Yam said.
