Fraudulent telephone banking system purporting to be related to Nanyang Commercial Bank, Limited

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) wishes to alert members of the public in Hong Kong to the telephone number (6631 8558) of a fraudulent voice response unit (VRU) which asks customers of Nanyang Commercial Bank, Limited (NCB) to register their account number and related personal identification number. NCB has issued a press release today (6 December) to clarify that NCB has no connection with the fraudulent VRU.

NCB has reported the case to the Hong Kong Police Force for further investigation. Anyone who has provided his or her personal information to the VRU or has conducted any financial transactions through the VRU should contact the NCB customer service hotline at 2622 2633 and any local Police Station or the Commercial Crime Bureau of the Hong Kong Police Force at 2860 5012.

An HKMA spokesman said that member of the public should be alert to the possibility of similar fraudulent VRUs claiming to represent other banks or financial institutions, and should always exercise care in giving out personal or account information.
