Meeting of the Council of Advisers

The Hong Kong Institute of Monetary Research (HKIMR) held its first meeting of the Council of Advisers today (8 September 1999).

The Council of Advisers, comprising mainly academics and economists from both the public and private sectors, is set up with the objective of enhancing the professionalism and strengthening the research capability of the HKIMR. The Council will meet regularly to advise on the direction of research activities, consider research proposals, and recommend and liaise with suitable fellows to conduct research projects for the HKIMR (see terms of reference of the Council at Annex A). The composition of the Council is as follows:

In addition to advisers based in Hong Kong, the HKIMR intends to invite prominent overseas scholars to the Council with a view to strengthening the international and regional aspects of its research work.

Chaired by Mr. Tony Latter, the Council discussed, among other things, the research agenda and the recruitment of research fellows of the HKIMR in today's meeting. Research activity in the Institute is expected to commence early next year.

Established by the HKMA, the HKIMR will conduct research in the field of monetary policy, banking and finance that is of strategic importance to Hong Kong and the Asian region. The first meeting of its Board of Directors was held on 17 August.

Terms of Reference

The terms of reference of the Council of Advisers are:

  1. to provide guidance and advice on the broad direction of research activities of the Institute;
  2. to nominate and assist in liaising with local and overseas scholars and researchers to conduct research for the Institute;
  3. to consider and provide comments on research proposals;
  4. to assist in evaluating the quality of research projects;
  5. to advise on strategies and measures to enhance the professionalism and strengthen the research capabilities of the Institute on an ongoing basis; and
  6. to promote the image of the Institute in Hong Kong and overseas.
