Opportunities for Students and Graduates to Join the HKMA

The HKMA operates a two-year Manager Trainee (MT) Programme. Our aim is to prepare young adults who are interested in central banking work to become our future key management staff and to contribute to the financial stability and prosperity of Hong Kong.

The HKMA operates a two-year Graduate Economist (GE) Programme. It aims to nurture young adults who are interested in economic research and help them develop their talents. They will provide the HKMA with economic and market analyses that are essential to its work in maintaining monetary and financial stability.

The Assistant Manager (AM) rank is an important backbone of the HKMA workforce. A vast majority of the AMs are involved in the HKMA’s function as the regulatory authority of the banking sector. They are deployed to the Banking Departments, namely Banking Conduct Department, Banking Policy Department, Banking Supervision Department and Enforcement & AML Department. Some AMs work in other functions such as the Research Department, Monetary Management Department and External Department.

The Research Department at the HKMA invites applications from students who are currently enrolled in a Ph.D. programme in economics, finance or related fields. The Ph.D. Fellowship programme is intended for students with a strong research interest in macroeconomic analysis, monetary policy transmission, financial market or financial stability issues.

The HKMA regularly hires undergraduate (especially penultimate-year) students as interns. They will have the opportunities to work closely with HKMA staff on specific projects or functions, and to gain invaluable insights into the roles of a central banking and supervisory authority. Talks on policy subjects and guided tours are arranged during the internship to enable the interns to learn more about the work of the HKMA. Interns with outstanding work performance will have advantages if they apply for permanent positions in the future.
