Three-tier Banking System |
 |
Authorized
institutions under the Banking Ordinance
comprise banks, restricted licence
banks and deposit-taking companies,
creating a licensing system with three distinct tiers. Restricted licence banks and deposit-taking
companies are restricted in the amounts and terms of deposits they may accept, and only banks
may operate current and savings accounts. No distinction is made, however, in the types of
lending or investment business in which the different tiers of authorized institutions may
engage.
