Joseph Yam's New Year Wishes

As in previous years, I have composed a Chinese couplet to mark the Chinese New Year. As always, it is very difficult to translate the couplet into English in a way that even comes close to the original form, so I will have to be content with a prose explanation of the thoughts behind it.

Very roughly then, the couplet says that, when fortunes change, Hong Kong’s financial institutions will have to show their strength, so that when Spring returns, the pearl of the orient will enjoy prosperity again.

My very best wishes to readers of this column for a successful and prosperous Year of the Rat.
