Exchange Fund Abridged Balance Sheet and Currency Board Account

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Monday) that the total assets of the Exchange Fund amounted to HK$3,904.9 billion as at 30 June 2017, HK$97.5 billion higher than that at the end of May 2017.  Foreign currency assets increased by HK$75.0 billion and Hong Kong dollar assets increased by HK$22.5 billion.

The rise in foreign currency assets was mainly due to an increase in unsettled purchases of securities and the purchase of foreign currencies with Hong Kong dollars.  The rise in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to additional placements from Fiscal Reserves, which were partly offset by sale of Hong Kong dollars for foreign currencies.

The Currency Board Account shows that the Monetary Base at the end of June 2017 was HK$1,663.4 billion, increased by HK$6.4 billion, or 0.4%, from the end of May 2017.  The rise was mainly due to the increase in the outstanding amount of Certificates of Indebtedness.

The amount of Backing Assets increased by HK$10.0 billion, or 0.6%, to HK$1,791.1 billion.  The increase was mainly attributable to the issuance of Certificates of Indebtedness, revaluation gains and interest from investments.  The backing ratio increased from 107.49% at the end of May 2017 to 107.68% at the end of June 2017.
