Monetary Statistics for June 2005

According to statistics published today (Friday) by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority, total deposits with authorized institutions increased by 0.7% in June 2005, as a 1.5% rise in Hong Kong dollar deposits more than offset a decline of 0.1% in foreign currency deposits. Within foreign currency deposits, renminbi deposits amounted to RMB20.9 billion yuan in June, compared with RMB19.3 billion yuan in May.

Total loans and advances expanded further by 1.7% in June, with loans for use in Hong Kong and outside Hong Kong rising by 1.9% and 0.7% respectively. Analysed by currency, Hong Kong dollar and foreign currency loans both registered an increase. As the rate of increase in Hong Kong dollar loans was larger than Hong Kong dollar deposits, the loan-to-deposit ratio edged up to 87.1% in June.

Analysed by economic uses, lending grew in almost all sectors on a quarter-on-quarter comparison. In particular, trade financing, loans for stockbrokers and the manufacturing sector registered notable increases.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, Hong Kong dollar M1 fell by 0.7% in June and by 6.4% from a year ago. Unadjusted Hong Kong dollar M2 and M3 both increased by 1.5% during the month, and by 7.1% and 6.9% respectively from a year earlier.
