The HKMA education campaign on the new series banknotes

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced today (Sunday) that a student ambassador programme has commenced operation to promote public awareness of the security features of the new series banknotes. The activity is a part of the overall education campaign launched by the HKMA.

Eighteen student ambassadors distributed educational leaflets and table stands illustrating the design and new security features of the new series banknotes to over 5,000 retailers today. They visited 18 shopping centres, 10 markets and major streets on the Hong Kong Island. The student ambassador programme covers major shopping areas through Hong Kong Island, Kowloon and the New Territories from 22 to 28 August, and on 18 September, 2 and 9 October.

An HKMA spokesperson said, "As another initiative under the education campaign, two public seminars will be organised on 25 September and 30 October to introduce to the general public the design and security features of the new series banknotes."

Members of the public are welcome to attend these seminars. The enrollment form is available at the HKMA website and the HKMA Information Centre at 55/F, Two International Finance Centre, 8 Finance Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Seminars targeting specific social groups including the elderly and the visually impaired will be held in September and October. The HKMA has also been organising monthly seminars for retailers since May 2004.

"The three denominations, $20, $50 and $1,000, of the new series banknotes will go into circulation in October 2004," the HKMA spokesperson added. Information about the new series banknotes is also available at the HKMA Information Centre.
