Reproduction of Hong Kong Coins

There is no need to seek the consent of the Monetary Authority for the filming of Hong Kong coins or reproduction of the image of Hong Kong coin, e.g. for printing purposes.  As the intellectual property right of the design of Hong Kong coins belongs to the Hong Kong SAR Government, application for the use of the image of Hong Kong coins should be made to the Information Services Department. 

Nonetheless, a person who, without the previous consent in writing of the Monetary Authority, makes anything which resembles a Hong Kong legal tender coin in shape, size and the substance of which it is made, commits an offence under Section 104 of the Crimes Ordinance (Cap. 200 of the Laws of Hong Kong).  The HKMA, in consultation with the Police, consider applications on a case-by-case basis and may request the applicant to submit specific information and impose conditions as appropriate.  Application procedures and relevant information are as follows:

Anyone who intends to make imitation Hong Kong coins must, in accordance with the above-mentioned Ordinance, apply to the HKMA with the following details: –

  • Name of applicant or organisation
  • Contact details of applicant or organisation
  • Use of the imitation Hong Kong coins
  • Number and denomination of imitation Hong Kong coins
